If you have a factory-built chimney, it’s likely you have a chimney chase top installed on it. Chase tops function similarly to chimney caps, but they cover the entire top section of the chimney, not just the flue opening.
Is a Chimney Chase Top Important?
The best way to address this question is to imagine a chimney with no chase top. The protective cement crown and the opening of the flue are now subject to rain, snow, lightning strikes, pounding hail, leaves and twigs from nearby trees and small animals looking for a place to live. These are not good scenarios for your chimney.
The two key functions of a chimney chase top are protecting the crown and keeping obstructions out of the flue.
Chase tops protect the chimney crown: The chimney crown is in place to keep water and moisture away from the masonry below it. Crowns are known to crack over time, and when this happens, water has a clear path to move through the cement, freeze and expand, break the crown apart and then begin infiltrating the chimney’s bricks. This can lead to significant decay and destruction of the chimney.
Chase tops prevent obstructions: Without a quality chimney chase top installed securely, tree debris or animals (and their nests) can get into the flue. All this leads to an obstruction that prevents the smooth, efficient drafting of smoke from the fireplace. If smoke can’t go up, it may go right into the home, carrying with it a variety of toxins including deadly carbon monoxide.
Types of Chase Tops
Stainless steel and galvanized steel are the most common materials used to make chimney chase tops. While both are steel products, there are important differences. Stainless steel is much sturdier and longer-lasting. Galvanized steel is prone to rust, which causes gradual deterioration of the component over time.
Appearance matters, too. Nobody wants a rusted galvanized chase top sitting on their chimney. A new stainless steel top will not only protect your chimney better but also look great for many more years.
