If you have a factory-built chimney, it’s likely you have a chimney chase top install
A chimney chase top is the metal covering used for a wood-framed chimney chase. Chase tops are only found on chimneys structures (chases) connected to factory-built fireplaces. The “chase” is a wood framed structure that contains the double walled chimney pipe used with manufactured fireplaces. These structures can be covered with siding to match the home, stone or brick facing. Resembling the lid of shoebox, these covers are generally standard with pre-fabricated fireplaces and are found on a number of modern builds. Since these particular chimney tops are usually crafted with cheap galvanized sheet metal, they often rust quickly and will need replaced every 7 to 10 years.
Stainless steel and galvanized steel are the most common materials used to make chimney chase tops. While both are steel products, there are important differences. Stainless steel is much sturdier and longer-lasting. Galvanized steel is prone to rust, which causes gradual deterioration of the component over time.
Appearance matters, too. Nobody wants a rusted galvanized chase top sitting on their chimney. A new stainless steel top will not only protect your chimney better but also look great for many more years.
When it’s time to replace a damaged chase top, count on the Magic Mountain team to do a superior job. All work is overseen by chimney technicians who are certified by the Chimney Safety Institute of America and the National Fireplace Institute.
